The first day of a new school year, for the adults in the building, is full of excitement, nerves, and scrambling to ensure every "i" is dotted and every "t" is crossed. Teachers pick out the special first day of school outfit, work to memorize students’ names as soon as possible, and do everything possible to ensure that every student leaves the first day feeling valued and excited about the year ahead.
Today, day two, already feels more comfortable. Perhaps it was the weather, and not needing to have indoor recess due to rain. Or maybe it was because, the learning community was already feeling comfortable - and excited. During lunch, students were asked, “What was the BEST thing about the first day of school this year?”
A few highlights from the responses:
“Playing outside with my friends.” - Emory, Preschool
“No homework!” - Russell, First Grade
“Meeting my teacher” - Dash, Second Grade
“Learning, and breakfast - we had French toast!” - Cameron, Sixth Grade
“Seeing my friends.” - Avery, Second Grade
“Creating self portraits” - Sarah Lydia, Fourth Grade
“Advisory” - Megdelawit, Eighth Grade
“Seeing my teachers, new and old” - Bailey, Fourth Grade
“Everything!” - Marcus, First Grade
Of course, lunch (“Chicken Nuggets!” - Kellan, First Grade) and recess made the list, but not nearly as often as friends, teachers, and classes. Students were especially excited about the dramatic read alouds, art class, dance class, history, English, and Spanish.
The year is off to a great start and we’re looking forward to the teaching and learning that will happen over the next 178 days.
